Helen Domleo Jewellery

I am a South African jeweller living a predominantly outdoor life in Nottinghamshire. Inspiration for my jewellery comes from pods, leaves and other natural objects around me, from my earlier work in the African bush, and travels around South East Asia.

I form and shape each piece, patterning the surfaces using hammers and other tools. Patterns can be imprinted, using a rolling mill, with a selection of fabrics, leaves or other fibres, or by hammering and stamping, to create rich textures. I add colour by using copper, brass and beads from natural materials or glass.

Games Workshop provides a hobby with endless imagination

As a mother of two teenage boys, I can tell you that our weekends are bliss. Strange really, as the house is full of friends who are preparing for battle... Tabletop battles with hundreds of Warhammer fantasy miniatures. They are cutting, gluing, painting, reading up on rules, listening to music and chatting with their fellow wargamers about their next tactics.
After filling them up with a good lunch, they jump on their bicycles to go to Warhammer World on Lenton Lane to spend their afternoon conquering their world!

Some weekends my kitchen cupboards are raided by my son. Not for food but for the packaging...as he is in the middle of a making some scenery.

"It is going to be a Tudor-style pub " Tom says when he pinches the Twinings cardboard tea box, stuffing the teabags in a jar. “Have you got any wooden tea stirrers, Mum? Can you collect them for me next time you go to have a coffee at CafĂ© Nero? Oh and I’m looking for some more cardboard boxes so that I can make the tiles on the roof.” Well, that’s him set up for the day...

This hobby has provided hundreds of hours of entertainment (amazing value for money if you think about it!) and no computer in sight. It has been incredibly sociable and although I don't understand the ins and outs of it all, they do. They are in their own world enjoying every minute of it.

Games Workshop will be attending the summer gathering and running a scenery making session using materials you can find around the house as well as running some great games.

If you would like to find out more about the Games Workshop hobby, come to Bridgford Park, join in the scenery making or gaming, or just stop by to have a chat about your army.

Games Workshop is a local company which specializes in making and manufacturing the best fantasy and science fiction miniatures and games in the world. The games include Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000, Lord of the Rings and many others. They have two Hobby Centres in Nottingham to show you how to collect, paint and play, one at 34a Friar Lane just off the Market Square and the other is the “Warhammer World” venue on Willow Road in the Lenton Industrial estate (0115 9168410). Both venues are very easily reached by bike or bus.

There is also Inspirations, the local stockist in West Bridgford, located at 18 Central Avenue, just a stone's throw away from the park. They have a wide range of Games Workshop products and hobby supplies and are more than willing to help you out.

On the day there will be model making, a game and a chance to win a Warhammer Prize

River Nene is supplying West Bridgford householders with wonderful Organic Vegetables!

Riverford is supplying West Bridgford householders with wonderful Organic Vegetables!

Serving West Bridgford for the past 6 years, Riverford (formerly known as River Nene) is now a well recognized and established regional organic vegetable box scheme and has supported the West Bridgford Summer Gathering since its inception.

Allan McKie and Annette Baulcombe (pictured) first set up a home delivery vegetable box scheme in the West Bridgford area as part of Peterborough-based River Nene Organic Vegetables in 2005. The scheme has proved so popular that the couple now deliver to homes and businesses throughout Nottinghamshire.

Seventy five per cent of the Riverford box scheme's produce comes from its own organic farms around Peterborough which have been managed organically since 2000, and from a cooperative Organic Grower Group whose farms are all within a 50-mile radius of the Riverford farm. The group grows an amazing 85 different varieties of vegetables, all seasonal of course.

Allan said "the scheme is aimed at shoppers looking for an alternative to supermarket organic fruit and vegetables, dairy and meat which is often quite expensive and much less fresh as it is sourced from much further afield and has a longer logistics chain to get to the shelves”
In addition to being very competitively priced compared to supermarket organics, the small price gap between it and conventionally grown produce is narrowing significantly following the recent price increases in non organic food due to the ever increasing cost of fertilizer (one tonne of fertilizer requires 8 tones of oil to manufacturer it). In terms of food miles too, a recent and very detailed study conducted between the 5 Riverford farms around the country and Exeter University shows that each delivery to a customers home requires only 4 miles which is very impressive. The customer also does not have the hassle of carrying it home or wasting fuel as we deliver free to their home."

Allan says "You can order online or by phone or e mail. If you need any help or advise we are here to help”.

Further information is available by visiting www.rivernene.co.uk or calling 0845 078 6868 or call Allan and Annette direct on 0115 981 0002 . We look forward to seeing you at the West Bridgford Summer Gathering.

'Trace the Rose'

'Trace the Rose' have put together a collection of beautiful accessories, ethically sourced and with the environment in mind. The words ‘fairtrade’ and ‘ethical’ do not have to mean that something cannot be stylish and well designed, far from it!

Bags, purses, scarves and jewellery can all be found in the range and if you are looking to shop with a conscience you are in the right place!

Many of the items are produced in countries where workers are frequently exploited and it is extremely hard for them to make a good living for themselves and their families. However by supporting producers within fairtrade organisations we can help these people build a livelihood and give them hope for the future.

You can find Trace the Rose at the West Bridgford summer gathering this year, or for more information, including how to hold your own accessory party, call Hannah on 07773125317 or visit http://www.tracetherose.com/

As part of Transition West Bridgford, 3 years ago we set up the West Bridgford Skills Exchange.
This is a group of people who all live in WB in walking/cycling distance of eachother.
They have been drawn to the scheme as they like the community building side of it as well as the sharing of skills, services and goods.

We have now got 106 members, who use the system regularly. The motto is: Give generously and receive graciously. Always to your best and take care of each other.
For each hour of a service, skill etc you will receive a token (gem) which can then be exchanged anywhere else in the system.

Stonebridge City Farm

Stonebridge City Farm has been described by visitors as "an unexpected oasis in the city". We are ten minutes walk from the city centre yet have a variety of farm and small animals, lovely gardens demonstrating just how much produce you can grow in a small space, a farm shop and a cafe. Volunteers from all sectors of the community work on the farm which is free to enter and open every day of the year except Christmas Day.

If you'd like to learn to grow your own food, need help starting up, are worried that you don't have enough space or are interested in learning about bee-keeping we can help with our "Green Street" project which has been funded by the Big Lottery Fund to help produce local food for the community. Grow your own food in window boxes, tyres, containers, raised beds or other limited spaces - or even larger gardens and community growing areas with the help and encouragement of the Outreach Worker giving you a start-up visit and ongoing support from the farm. Join a Beekeeping course at the farm or get advice and guidance from our bee-keeper. Join our mailing list and keep informed about regular workshops and events at the farm.

On the day of the West Bridgeford Summer Gathering we will be selling plants, eggs and honey and showing you how you can grow pots of Mixed Salad and Herb Leaves to take home and grow on your windowsill.

Welbeck Farm Shop

Anyone interested in good food should head straight for the Welbeck farm shop in the Harley Gallery courtyard next to the vast walled gardens. We specialize in meat and game – including fantastic venison and rabbit – sourced from the estate and butchered and hung in the shop. Butchers Mark, Robert and Paul – with more than 50 years experience between them – will produce any cut of meat you want, from the cheapest brisket to the most luxurious 30 day-hung fillet. There’s a good cheese counter too. It stocks Colston Bassett Stilton, Lincolnshire Poacher and raw-milk Stichelton made on the estate by Joe Schneider from the estate’s own cow’s milk. You’ll find good fruit and veg from local farms. Look out too for locally brewed Roaring Meg beer and soon Welbeck will have its own brewery supplying the shop, Thaymar Ice Cream, and stoneground flour from Tuxford Windmill. Andrew, the farm shop’s resident chef, makes use of our display kitchen and uses local ingredients to produce pate ,soup and If you’re pressed for time, the frozen ready meals, also cooked here, could save your bacon.

Transition Town, working today for a sustainable tomorrow.

As this is the 3rd anniversary of Transition West Bridgford (www.transitionwb.co.uk) we shall have a stall where we will be show casing the various initiatives that are currently running.
The Eco House Group, Solar Rushcliffe and the Great Green Garden are just a few of them
come and find out what we do and join us in trying to make West Bridgford less dependent on oil.

Transition Town Kinsale was the world's first Transition Town. It is a voluntary community initiative working to help make the transition from a dependency on fossil fuel to a low carbon future. What began in Kinsale in 2005 has become something of a movement internationally. Rob Hopkins, teacher of Permaculture at Kinsale Further Education College, produced the groundbreaking Kinsale Energy Descent Action Plan with his students, exploring ways in which the community could prepare for Peak Oil. One of his students, Louise Rooney, set about developing the Transition Towns concept resulting in the historic decision by Kinsale Town Council to adopt the plan and work towards energy independence. Rob moved to the UK where he established the second Transition Town in Totnes which has become an inspiring focal point of the movement.Since then they have been springing up all over the place. Bristol, Lewes, Falmouth and Stroud have all taken on the Transition Town guidelines. We look forward to welcoming you all to our stall.

Nottingham City Transport bring brand new high quality Eco bus into West Bridgford

NCT are pleased to support the West Bridgford Summer Gathering, with our special one day only travel offers available today. Come along and find out about our frequent, direct bus services into Nottingham and how you can travel on them from less than £1 per day

NCT is a successful local public transport operator, committed to providing a high quality service to its passengers. Through regular consultation and research, NCT has reversed a 50 year declining market and increased bus usage on the network to over 50 million last year.
Over the last five years, NCT has invested £30m in the bus fleet to provide Nottingham with one of the most modern, environmentally friendly and accessible bus fleets in the country. £4.5m is being invested in 36 new buses in 2008, with brand new, high quality vehicles due for West Bridgford Go2 routes 6, 10 and 11.

These buses will have Euro 4 EGR engines, which meet stringent standards to minimise emissions. Scania's preferred system, EGR attacks emissions at source, allowing buses to continue running on standard diesel fuel. Some of the exhaust gases are recycled back into the engine which gives lower nitrogen oxide emissions. Scania EGR combines lower emissions with excellent operating economy and the system reduces emissions in all conditions and is ideal for city buses travelling at lower speeds with frequent stops in urban areas.
NCT is also running three buses on ethanol, as part of a trial with Nottingham City Council following investment from the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) to assess the technical, environmental and business case for using ethanol to fuel buses. Early research indicates the ethanol-powered buses will reduce CO2 emissions by 30 tonnes per bus per year. It is also expected that there will be a reduction in Nitrous Oxide, which is another greenhouse gas, as well as less particulate matter from the exhaust.

The ethanol used to fuel the buses is being sourced from waste produced by Sweden’s paper and pulp industry, which is at the forefront of sustainable forestry practices. During the trial period, these costs will be assessed against locally-grown sugar beet and wood, to help determine whether in future, the ethanol could be sourced closer to Nottingham. This follows the recent opening of an ethanol production plant by British Sugar at Whissington in Norfolk, which uses locally produced excess sugar beet to generate the fuel.

With an modern bus fleet, quick and direct routes to and from the City Centre running up to
every 10 minutes and Easyrider smart travel available from less than £1 per day, NCT offers not only an affordable way of getting about, but also an environmentally friendly way.

Easyrider travel cards are pre-purchased smart cards, available from the NCT Travel Centre in the Old Market Square.

Easyrider City is a consecutive days travel card and is available in 7 or 28 day, 3 month, 6 month or 12 month periods. Once obtained, it can be renewed by Direct Debit at £40 per month, online or over the telephone. A young persons version is available to passengers aged 18 and under.

Easyrider Anytime is a non-consecutive days travel card and is available in 3, 5, 10, 20 or 100 day periods. With an Anytime card, the days only count down on the days you travel and is ideal for the less regular traveller. The 20 day option at £45 gives unlimited NCT bus travel for £2.25 per day, a saving of 75 pence per day compared to the on-bus day ticket at £3.

With an Easyrider card, you can also travel to and from East Midlands Airport on the Skylink bus for a special add on fare of £1 Day Return.

Current prices for all Easyrider smart cards are available online at www.nctx.co.uk
We will be selling the Easyrider Anytime card at the Summer Gathering with a special offer exclusively for the day.

Nottingham Skylink is the greenest way to travel to East Midlands Airport!

Nottingham Skylink is the greenest way to travel to East Midlands Airport!

East Midlands Airport is dedicated to providing excellent transport links through the Skylink network of buses and offering our passengers a greener way to travel.

Like last year, we will be on hand at the Summer Gathering to provide information on getting to the Airport, including routes, timetables and fares so that you have all you need to make smarter travel choices.

The Iona School - Nurturing mind, body and soul.

"Our highest endeavour must be to develop free human beings who can impart purpose and direction to their lives" Rudolf Steiner

The Iona School is a Steiner Waldorf School on Sneinton Dale in Nottingham for children aged between 3 1/2 to 12 years. (20 minutes cycle ride from West Bridgford) The children attend Kindergarten until they are around 6 years old and then move up to the main school.

The school was founded in 1985 by a group of teachers and parents who established The Iona School Association with the intention that this education should be available to all children regardless of race, religion or economic background.

At the Iona School we aim to give the children eternal values, self confidence, a love of learning, an ability to work with others, enduring practical skills, spiritual freedom and an open and tolerant attitude. We believe that education should be a continuing process, and our task is to stimulate and develop the faculties and skills which enable our pupils to learn….for life…from life….throughout life.

Quote from the Ofsted inspector" It was noted that "throughout the school, the strong philosophical emphasis on balancing academic learning and developing skills in the arts and practical activities is put into practice successfully. The school makes outstanding provision for pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and it is at the heart of the school's purpose. The emphasis on quiet reflection, tolerance of self and others, and creative development means that there is a great celebration of diversity and different ways of doing things."

At the Summer Gathering there will be an opportunity to find out more about our school from our information stand. Our School Shop will also be there selling quality wooden toys, pocket money toys, Weleda skin care products, crafts and cards.

South Notts College

South Nottingham College offers general further education to people living in the East Midlands. As a public service best practice is to respond directly to the needs and wants of local people and communities, therefore the college is very keen to develop educational programmes that help people be better prepared to live and work in a low carbon economy.

At the summer gathering we will showcase the ‘Missile’, this is attractively designed completely electrical car. We train young people in vehicle maintenance and are the only UK college to introduce an accredited programme for training with electric vehicles. Learners between the ages of 14-18 have responded very enthusiastically to this opportunity. We hope visitors will take the opportunity to test drive the vehicle and have their photograph taken with it.

In addition staff and students from our highly successful Travel and Tourism department will be able to inform visitors about their work around global education. Their project has an international element with a close relationship to partners in Gambia, West Africa which has produced some very innovative work around sustainability and responsible tourism. A very interactive day is planned and we hope visitors will take the opportunity to find out about this unique work.

Helen Wilcockson has also offered to run a flash-dance on the 14th if the organisers would like it to happen, this would involve 25 of our students delivering a dance routine and is something they’ve done for several years now, it mirrors the television adverts were a mass choreographed spontaneously happens in an airport.
