Nottingham City Transport bring brand new high quality Eco bus into West Bridgford

NCT are pleased to support the West Bridgford Summer Gathering, with our special one day only travel offers available today. Come along and find out about our frequent, direct bus services into Nottingham and how you can travel on them from less than £1 per day

NCT is a successful local public transport operator, committed to providing a high quality service to its passengers. Through regular consultation and research, NCT has reversed a 50 year declining market and increased bus usage on the network to over 50 million last year.
Over the last five years, NCT has invested £30m in the bus fleet to provide Nottingham with one of the most modern, environmentally friendly and accessible bus fleets in the country. £4.5m is being invested in 36 new buses in 2008, with brand new, high quality vehicles due for West Bridgford Go2 routes 6, 10 and 11.

These buses will have Euro 4 EGR engines, which meet stringent standards to minimise emissions. Scania's preferred system, EGR attacks emissions at source, allowing buses to continue running on standard diesel fuel. Some of the exhaust gases are recycled back into the engine which gives lower nitrogen oxide emissions. Scania EGR combines lower emissions with excellent operating economy and the system reduces emissions in all conditions and is ideal for city buses travelling at lower speeds with frequent stops in urban areas.
NCT is also running three buses on ethanol, as part of a trial with Nottingham City Council following investment from the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) to assess the technical, environmental and business case for using ethanol to fuel buses. Early research indicates the ethanol-powered buses will reduce CO2 emissions by 30 tonnes per bus per year. It is also expected that there will be a reduction in Nitrous Oxide, which is another greenhouse gas, as well as less particulate matter from the exhaust.

The ethanol used to fuel the buses is being sourced from waste produced by Sweden’s paper and pulp industry, which is at the forefront of sustainable forestry practices. During the trial period, these costs will be assessed against locally-grown sugar beet and wood, to help determine whether in future, the ethanol could be sourced closer to Nottingham. This follows the recent opening of an ethanol production plant by British Sugar at Whissington in Norfolk, which uses locally produced excess sugar beet to generate the fuel.
