Serving West
Bridgford for the past 7 years, Riverford (formerly known as River Nene) is now
a well-recognised presence throughout Nottinghamshire with well over 1500 loyal customers receiving their fresh fruit,
vegetables, meat and dairy produce and much more direct to their kitchen tables from the farm. Allan and Annette live in West
Bridgford and have supported the West Bridgford Summer Gathering every year
since its inception.
Allan and Annette
(pictured) first set up a home delivery vegetable box scheme in the West
Bridgford area as part of Peterborough-based River Nene Organic Vegetables in
2005. The scheme has proved so popular that the couple now deliver to homes and
businesses throughout Nottinghamshire.
Seventy five per
cent of the Riverford produce comes from its own organic farms around
Peterborough which have been managed organically since 2000, and from a
cooperative Organic Grower Group whose farms are all within a 50-mile radius of
the Riverford farm. The group grows an amazing 85 different varieties of
vegetables, all seasonal of course.
Allan said
"we find that most customers buy from us purely for the quality of the
taste of the naturally grown and reared produce. The flavour comes from not
intensively growing produce using pesticides and other products conventional
farmers use to increase the speed of growth and the yield.
We easily beat the
prices supermarkets charge for organic produce and we deliver it to your home
free of charge.”
Allan adds “we are
about 7% more expensive than the supermarkets better quality non organic
produce which means that a typical customer spending £15 per week with us are
paying a small premium of just 98p and for that they get not only free delivery
but also great tasting healthy organic produce thrown into the bargain”
“In terms of food
miles too, a recent and very detailed study conducted between the 5 Riverford
farms around the country and Exeter University shows that each delivery to a
customer’s home requires only 4 miles of transportation which is very
impressive."

now employ 4 local drivers to deliver the produce to your door, two West Bridgford
garages to keep the vans lean and mean, a West Bridgford based book-keeping and
accountancy service, local ink suppliers and computer support technicians and a
host of others that help us keep our business in good health and reinvesting in
the local community.”
